Pergola vs Patio vs Gazebo – What's the Difference?

Pergola

A pergola is a freestanding or wall-mounted outdoor structure that remains independent from the house. Modern aluminium louvred pergolas feature adjustable roof louvres, allowing you to control sunlight, ventilation, and rain protection. They are ideal for extending an existing outdoor living area, are highly DIY-friendly, require very little maintenance, and can be upgraded later with blinds, LED lighting, and other accessories.

Best for: Home renovations, outdoor entertaining, DIY projects, and homeowners looking for a flexible, low-maintenance outdoor living space.

Patio

A patio is a permanent roof structure that is built as part of the house or added as a fixed extension. It usually requires professional construction and offers permanent shelter but does not provide adjustable shade or ventilation. Installation is generally more complex, with higher labour costs and less flexibility for future modifications.

Best for: New home builds or major home extensions where a permanent roof structure is preferred.

Gazebo

A gazebo is a freestanding outdoor structure with a fixed roof, commonly used as a garden feature or separate relaxation area. While it provides shade and shelter, it is typically designed as a standalone outdoor structure rather than an extension of the home's living space.

Best for: Decorative garden spaces, parks, and dedicated outdoor seating or relaxation areas.

Aluminium VS Timber

Choose an Aluminium Pergola if you:

  • Prefer a modern appearance.
  • Want minimal maintenance.
  • Plan to install it yourself or reduce installation costs.
  • Want adjustable louvres, blinds or LED lighting.
  • Want a long-term outdoor living solution.

Choose a Timber Pergola if you:

  • Prefer a traditional natural timber look.
  • Enjoy custom woodworking projects.
  • Don't mind regular maintenance such as painting or staining.
  • Want a completely custom-built timber structure.

Our Recommendation

For most Australian homeowners, an aluminium louvred pergola offers the best balance of durability, low maintenance, DIY-friendly installation, weather resistance and long-term value.

Motorised VS Manual

Choose a Motorised Pergola if you:

  • Use your outdoor area regularly for entertaining.
  • Want maximum convenience.
  • Prefer remote or app control.
  • Would like integrated LED lighting.
  • Are creating a premium outdoor living space.

Choose a Manual Pergola if you:

  • Want the best value for money.
  • Don't mind manually adjusting the louvres.
  • Prefer a simple mechanical system without electrical components.
  • Are looking for a reliable, low-maintenance solution.

Our Recommendation

If your pergola will be a major part of your outdoor lifestyle, we recommend choosing a motorised pergola. The convenience of remote operation, integrated LED lighting, and optional smart control significantly improves the overall user experience. If you're looking for the most cost-effective solution, the manual pergola remains an excellent choice with the same durable aluminium structure and weather protection.

Freestanding VS Wall-Mounted

Choose a Freestanding Pergola if you:

  • Want maximum flexibility in positioning.
  • Have an open backyard or pool area.
  • Prefer a standalone outdoor feature.
  • May want to redesign your outdoor layout in the future.

Choose a Wall-Mounted Pergola if you:

  • Want to extend your existing patio or alfresco area.
  • Prefer a seamless connection between your home and outdoor living space.
  • Have a suitable structural wall for installation.
  • Want a cleaner and more integrated appearance.

Our Recommendation

If you're extending your existing outdoor entertaining area, a wall-mounted pergola usually provides the most seamless result. If you want complete flexibility or are creating a new outdoor living space away from the house, a freestanding pergola is generally the better choice.

Choosing the Right Pergola Size

OUTMOS offers one of Australia's widest ranges of standard pergola sizes, making it easy to find a pergola that suits your outdoor space without the cost of custom manufacturing.

Available Standard Sizes:

2 × 3 m; 2 × 4 m; 2 × 5 m; 3 × 3 m; 3 × 4 m; 3 × 5 m; 3 × 6 m; 3 × 7 m; 3 × 8 m; 4 × 4 m; 4 × 5 m; 4 × 6 m; 4 × 8 m

Our Recommendation

Based on years of experience, **we generally recommend choosing the largest pergola your space can comfortably accommodate**.

Although a larger pergola costs slightly more, it provides a significantly more usable outdoor living area. In real-life conditions, sunlight and rain rarely fall straight down, so the practical sheltered area is often smaller than the pergola's overall dimensions. Choosing a slightly larger size usually provides a much better long-term result.

FAQ - Which Model to Choose

The advantages of using an aluminium louvred pergola

Aluminium louvred pergolas are designed to provide a modern, low-maintenance outdoor living solution while giving you complete control over your outdoor environment.

  • Adjustable louvres – Open the louvres to enjoy sunshine and fresh air, or close them to provide shade and shelter from rain, making them ideal for Australia's changing weather.
  • Strong and durable – Manufactured from high-quality aluminium, aluminium louvred pergolas are corrosion-resistant, rust-resistant, and designed for long-term outdoor use.
  • Modern appearance – The clean, contemporary design complements a wide range of homes and outdoor spaces.
  • Low maintenance – Unlike timber, aluminium does not require regular painting or staining. Occasional cleaning is all that's needed to keep it looking its best.
  • DIY-friendly installation – OUTMOS pergolas are designed for straightforward installation, with detailed instructions, installation videos, and technical support available if required.
  • Customisable – Available in multiple sizes, colours, and optional accessories such as LED lighting and motorised blinds, allowing you to create an outdoor space that suits your lifestyle.
The advantages of using pergola brackets to construct a pergola

OUTMOS pergola brackets are designed to make building a timber pergola faster, easier, and more accurate—even for first-time DIYers.

  • DIY friendly – No carpentry experience, complex joinery, or angle calculations are required. The brackets are pre-engineered, making assembly simple and reducing installation mistakes.
  • Fast installation – Most projects can be completed by one or two people in a single day, compared with traditional timber pergolas that often require skilled trades and significantly more installation time.
  • Save on labour costs – Because the system is designed for DIY installation, most homeowners can avoid the high cost of hiring professional carpenters.
  • Strong and durable – Our brackets are manufactured from heavy-duty 3 mm steel with a durable powder-coated finish, providing excellent structural strength and long-term outdoor performance.
  • Flexible design – You can choose the timber length and pergola size that best suits your outdoor space. We also provide sizing guides to help you calculate the required timber before purchasing.
  • Professional-looking results – The pre-engineered bracket system creates clean, consistent connections, giving your finished pergola a neat and professional appearance while reducing material waste.
What kind of wood is the most suitable for my project?

OUTMOS pergola brackets are compatible with a wide range of structural timber, giving you the flexibility to choose the wood that best suits your budget, design, and project requirements.

Popular options in Australia include treated pine, cypress, and hardwood. As long as the timber is structurally suitable and matches the bracket size, it can be used to build your pergola.

Construction timber is readily available from local timber suppliers and retailers such as Bunnings, making it easy to source the materials you need.

For outdoor applications, we recommend using treated timber or applying a protective exterior finish, such as stain, oil, varnish, or paint, to help improve weather resistance and extend the life of the timber.

How often should I maintain my OUTMOS pergola?

OUTMOS aluminium pergolas are designed to be low maintenance, requiring very little ongoing care.

For most homeowners, occasional cleaning with water and a mild detergent is all that's needed to keep the pergola looking its best. The powder-coated aluminium frame is resistant to rust and corrosion, so it does not require painting, staining, or other regular treatments.

We also recommend periodically removing leaves and other debris from the louvres and integrated gutter system to ensure rainwater can drain freely. In most cases, simply opening the louvres will allow loose leaves to fall away, and any remaining debris can be rinsed away with water.

With basic cleaning and occasional gutter maintenance, your OUTMOS pergola will continue to perform well for many years.

Is the OUTMOS pergola rust-proof?

Yes. OUTMOS aluminium pergolas are manufactured from premium 6005-T5 aluminium alloy, a material widely used in high-quality outdoor structures for its excellent strength and corrosion resistance.

The aluminium frame is also finished with a durable powder coating, providing additional protection against rust, corrosion, and everyday weather exposure. Unlike traditional steel structures, aluminium requires very little maintenance and is designed for long-term outdoor use in Australian conditions.

Can I install LED lights myself?

Can I install LED lights myself?

Yes, but it depends on which pergola model you have.

  • Manual Pergolas (Sunrise Series): You can install your own LED strip lights, including solar-powered options, if you wish. As these pergolas are not pre-designed with integrated LED channels, the lighting will need to be surface-mounted.
  • Motorised Pergolas (Twilight & Skyline Series): The integrated LED lighting is factory-installed and fully wired before delivery. No additional installation is required—simply connect the pergola to power and the lights are ready to use.

If you're unsure which lighting option is best for your project, our team is happy to help you choose the most suitable pergola before ordering.

Are the louvres tilted for the pergolas? How does the water drain away from the pergola?

Are the louvres sloped? How does water drain from an OUTMOS pergola?

The answer depends on the pergola type.

Wall-mounted pergolas

Most OUTMOS wall-mounted pergolas are designed with a slight fall away from the house. The louvres run perpendicular to the wall, allowing rainwater to naturally flow away from the building toward the front of the pergola.

Please note that the standard (non-Heavy Duty) 3 × 6 m and 4 × 6 m wall-mounted models are exceptions and do not incorporate this built-in fall.

Freestanding pergolas

All OUTMOS freestanding pergolas are designed with level (non-sloping) louvres. The drainage system is engineered to operate effectively without requiring the roof to be installed on a slope.

How does the drainage system work?

When the louvres are fully closed, rainwater is collected by the integrated drainage channels built into the louvre system. The water then flows into the concealed perimeter gutters surrounding the pergola.

From the gutters, the water enters the internal drainage openings at the top of each post, travels down through the hollow posts, and finally exits through the drainage outlets at the base of the posts.

This concealed drainage design keeps all water management hidden within the pergola structure, providing a clean appearance while efficiently directing rainwater away from the outdoor living area.

What foundation do I need for my OUTMOS pergola?

OUTMOS aluminium pergolas can be securely installed on most flat, solid, and structurally sound surfaces.

Suitable installation surfaces include:

  • Concrete slabs
  • Timber decking (provided the pergola is fixed into the structural frame beneath the decking boards)
  • Composite decking with adequate structural support
  • Paved or tiled areas built on a solid concrete base

The pergola is secured using anchor bolts, so the supporting surface must be stable enough to safely carry the weight of the structure.

If your pergola is being installed on soil, grass, gravel, or other soft ground, we recommend constructing suitable concrete footings or a concrete slab before installation to provide a secure foundation.

If you are unsure whether your installation surface is suitable, our team is happy to provide advice before you place your order.
